For instance, in food products advertisements, mostly women are the ones who are always the face of the products, by showing them preparing the breakfast for the family, implying that all the cooking and cleaning are women’s job. This portrayal by the media keeps individuals in their predefined roles, planting fear in them to pursue their own careers due to certain careers already genderized to certain people.
Next, media portrayal of gender stereotypes can cause mental health problems. Beauty standards nowadays showcase that women are flawless, smooth skin and skinny body. Meanwhile, men are thought of as strong and have great strength. This look that the media planted surely causing anxiety and depression to fit in the image of what society think of. For instance, woman will be having eating disorders due to extreme diet in order to achieve slenderific looks while men will be called weak if they do not have certain strengths like society hopes for. This problem irrevocably increases suicidal rate among both genders.
On this account, it is crucial for us to unravel the various stereotypes perpetuated by media on gender. This can be done effectually through the proselytization of inclusive content. The media portrayal of gender should take charge in producing content that reflects diversity and challenges the traditional gender roles within society. In essence, film and TV shows should contain women and men in unconventional roles. Specifically, women being in leadership roles such as female executives, and men being in caregiving roles such as male nurses. Breaking away from stereotypical portrayals not only reflects on modern realities but also inspires viewers to envision wide possibilities for themselves.
Other than that, media literacy plays an essential role in questioning gender stereotypes as it equips audiences with analysing skills and ways to interpret media content. Educating viewers, especially the vulnerable youths about the way gender is portrayed in media can help them to develop deeper awareness of how stereotypes are maintained. This will aid audiences to challenge and reshape those portrayals. Audiences will be able to analyse subtext, like the gender roles hidden beneath seemingly innocent content.
